Main Objective:

Serve as the lead electrical engineer for the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering department developing and supporting electrical DFx efforts on new and existing products.  The engineer will be representing operations and working closely with new product development teams. The engineer will be supporting the generation of electrical hardware requirements, electrical system design, electronic circuit design, embedded software development, developing test requirements and test procedures as well as PC-based simulation and data acquisition of class I & II medical device equipment.  In addition, provide technical support and guidance to external suppliers, CM’s and internal departments in the areas of electronic manufacturing, design, research, new or enhanced circuit analysis, simulation methods, testing and technical documentation.  Qualified candidates are required to write detailed electrical specifications for electrical testing, generate and review test specifications/test reports in compliance with design control procedures.  Exposure to the medical device industry is preferred.  The engineer will work in a fast paced, multi-tasking, team environment that supports growth and aspirations.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and guide new product designs to be cost effective through DFx
  • Lead the DFx efforts for the electrical departments and participate on engineering teams that design high reliability microprocessor-based systems architectural tradeoffs, digital/analog/RF circuits, embedded C/C++ and ultra-low power battery circuits
  • Support the design, development and test of both hardware and software of Class I & II medical devices and automated test systems 
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, operations and engineering functions to troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing issues, ensure successful product launch and facilitate transition of manufacturing activities to the operations group 
  • Provide guidance to engineering on design concepts and specifications that best utilize manufacturing equipment and manufacturing techniques
  • Work closely with Mechanical, Software, Manufacturing and other engineering disciplines to meet project schedules
  • Represent the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering function in the New Product Development Teams and Program Office to communicate strategy, plans, schedules, progress and accomplishments
  • Support Manufacturing in troubleshooting operations involving medical devices through assembly and test
  • Provide technical assistance to other functional departments such as Production, Quality and Reliability 
  • Supports the implementation of component replacement for end of life and continuous improvement projects
  • Implement Design for Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM) principles within the functional areas
  • Support Manufacturing in troubleshooting operations involving medical devices through assembly and test
  • Assist & provide technical guidance to the Quality Assurance team with CM inquiries 
  • Review, develop, and document circuit and device level tester requirements
  • Support, debug, and qualification of manufacturing test equipment (PCBA and Device)
  • Provide Regulatory department technical support for assigned projects as needed.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Required to provide sustaining support for existing product lines. This may include component second sourcing, analysis and resolution of field issues and/or manufacturing issues.
  • Provide engineering expertise in any or all these areas: design, analysis and testing of analog and digital electronics, system architecture.
  • Test RF amplifiers, magnetics, switchmode power supplies, high power motor drivers.
  • Provide guidance to design and manufacturing engineering analyzing circuits containing microprocessors, A/D and D/A converters, programmable logic, memory devices, high-speed serializer/deserializer SerDes, and other mixed-signal and power devices.
  • Value engineer concurrent designs and processes
  • Hands-on debug and rework of designs from proof-of-concept through production.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams of design, software, mechanical, test, and production engineers to create new Resection and RF ablation electronics hardware.
  • Interface with PCB designers circuit layout placement and routing to maintain circuit performance and signal integrity.
  • Assist with IQ/OQ/PQ activities
  • Support Product Management with technical information to be used for cost trade-off analysis for new/existing products
  • Report progress and status of assigned projects on a timely basis.
  • Domestic/International travel may be required to support vendors and/or customers.
  • Work independently, in consultation with an Engineering Manager
  • Travel up to 25% of the time required

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering required; MS preferred.
  • 8+ years relevant engineering experiences required. 
  • 5+ years experience in the testing and assembly of digital, analog, power and RF circuit design for embedded microcontroller systems preferred
  • Medical device company experience preferred
  • Lean Six Sigma experience – preferred
     

Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses and/or Training:

  • Expert understanding of electronic design (analog, high-speed digital, RF amplifiers, power supplies, motor drivers), EMC/EMI mitigation, manufacturing and assembly.
  • Strong knowledge of formal PCBA documentation (schematics, PCB fabrication drawings, PCB assembly drawings)
  • Strong knowledge of state-of-the-art PCB fabrication technology (SMT, BGA, blind and buried microvia, flex circuits, etc.) and assembly
  • Knowledge of schematic design and layout using CAD tools for PCB design such as OrCAD, Cadence Allegro and/or Altium Designer
  • Must be a hands-on engineer and excited to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient in electronics testing, troubleshooting, and rework from component level through system level.
  • Strong and demonstrable knowledge of electronic test equipment.
  • Knowledge of electronic design tools (schematic capture, PCB layout, simulation tools), preferably Altium.
  • Understanding of digital circuits and implementation including high-speed programmable components (e.g. microprocessors, FPGAs), DDR memory, communications, peripherals, etc.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of full life medical product development preferred.
  • Skilled in leading multi-discipline design reviews.
  • Electronics environmental testing and packaging for challenging applications.
  • Working knowledge of medical device electrical safety standards preferred.
  • Knowledge of endoscopic surgery preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of FDA and ISO guidelines for the development of medical devices preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and accountability to project deliverable timing.
  • Experience supporting engineering teams in the design and development of electronics hardware and software for products and test equipment
  • Working knowledge of LabView, TestStand or similar automated test software
  • Strong experience in technical report writing and presentations
  • Fundamental knowledge of other related disciplines towards the understanding of how they affect electrical systems
  • Ability to work in a team environment; strong collaboration skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements that pertain to medical device electronic systems
  • Knowledge of manufacturing test equipment design
  • Knowledge of the implementation of standardized radios such as Bluetooth Low Energy
  • Experience working with vendors and contract manufacturers for PCB fabrication and assembly

 

Machine, Tools, and/or Equipment Skills:

Knowledge of oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, logic analyzers, waveform analyzers, electrical testing equipment, PC and instrumentation. Bench top testing, troubleshooting and rework with typical lab equipment.
