Main Objective: The VIP Product Developer will support all Preoperative planning Development and Research needs including those outside the Arthroplasty Team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manages VIP Development and Digital Research projects.
- Maintains a leading edge understanding of the orthopedic industry, customers, and competitors to find new and novel opportunities to grow the business and reduce cost.
- Assesses new technology and new product ideas for technical and economic feasibility.
- Evaluates and develops improved techniques for the control of product development activities.
- Evaluates potential software solutions to further aid in preoperative planning or development needs.
- Work closely with Product Management teams in ascertaining development needs.
- Provides Regulatory department technical support for projects as needed.
- Supports Marketing and Product Management with technical information to be used for training and marketing of assigned products.
- Supports Orthopedic Research Department by providing technical expertise and knowledge as needed.
- Maintain a leading edge understanding in anatomical analysis, and preoperative planning technology.
- Develop novel preoperative planning methods or processes by utilizing leading edge software to analyze critical anatomy and deliver technical support documentation as required.
- Develop novel transfer device designs for the translation of preoperative plans by using a combination approach of anatomical analysis, landmark analysis, 3D CAD design, and other applicative methods.
- Supports Engineering in development of novel methods for the design of patient specific implants and transfer devices based on patient medical data.
- Aid in the evaluation of both preoperative planning methods and devices in either a virtual setting, or with cadaver specimens, and determination of design input requirements.
- Gather surgeon and Product Management feedback on preoperative planning and transfer device designs.
- Reports progress and status of projects monthly with emphasis on reporting results to direct supervisor and when required senior management.
- Work in a collaborative team environment to develop cutting edge solutions for future preoperative planning needs.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor of Science Degree required, preferably in Engineering, Biological Sciences, or another applicable Scientific field.
- Basic CAD skills with knowledge of programs such as: Solidworks, Simpleware, Materialise Innovation Suite (Mimics, 3-matic, Magics), AutoCAD, Geomagics, etc.
- Basic level knowledge and understanding of the utilization of medical imaging data (e.g., CT scans, X-Ray, etc.) for any applicable need.
- Basic level knowledge of the utilization of digital anatomy for analytical, design, or treatment.
- Previous experience in medical device design or medical practice is highly preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Working knowledge of joint anatomy and physiology, along with surgical techniques used to treat them.
- Ability to quickly learn anatomy and techniques as the need arises.
- Sound understanding of analytical principles such as statistics, spatial analysis, statistical shape modeling, etc.
- Proficiency in utilizing medical imaging to produce 3D model for analysis or design use.
- Proficiency in identification of anatomical landmarks or features necessary for precise analysis and transfer.
- Proficiency in understanding deviations in pathological anatomy from baseline anatomy
- Proficiency in designing products using 3D-CAD programs (Solidworks, Mimics, etc.).
- Technical knowledge in development methodologies, design, and project implementation.
- Knowledge of orthopedic surgery principles, theories, and products.
- Proficiency in assessing the value of new product ideas based on technical and financial merits.
