Main Objective:


The Usability Project Manager – Digital Enabling Technology (UPMDET) is primarily responsible for managing assigned projects within the scope of the Digital Enabling Technology team (UX design validation, formative and summative usability testing, operations, planning, research roadmaps, design controls, research dashboards, research participant scheduling, etc.). The UPMDET will also assist the Director of Digital Enabling Technologies in managing the corporate governance of the Human Centered Design department, through tools and processes that assist the VP of Strategic Development in his day-to-day management of the business.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Work with UX designers, HF researchers, product managers, developers, user experience designers/researchers, and business stakeholders to prioritize human factors and ergonomics needs in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
  • Create long-term research plans, defining and tracking usability testing initiatives for product development teams
  • Collaborate with Human Centered Design Lead to report on key performance indicators of research project success
  • Deliver monthly written reports and oral presentations of key insights, research timelines, and project statuses to leadership, stakeholders, and cross functional teams.
  • Organize, plan, and facilitate early stage design and product definition activities, including research, interviews, personas, workshops, and focus groups.
  • Coordinate with UX and HF teams to align research processes, formalize participant recruiting, screening, scheduling and writing of usability test plans and reports.
  • Perform the role of validating design concepts and product ideas with customers and gathering actionable feedback on user needs and usability.
  • Participate in collaborative sessions with UX designers to translate research results into personas, prototypes, usage scenarios, and workflows.
  • Communicate research findings to the Human Centered Design Center of Execellence to educate assorted audiences through written reports and oral presentations.
  • Optimize research and reporting efficiencies for conducting usability testing for design controls and UX design validation.


Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor of Science degree in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Engineering Psychology, Experimental Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, Usability, User Experience or similar required
  • Masters or Ph.D. degree in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Engineering Psychology, Experimental Psychology, or similar a plus
  • 7+ years relevant work experience, including experience integrating human factors standards and research into product designs and design practices
  • 3+ years’ experience working in the medical industry required
  • Experience with task analysis, contextual inquiry, heuristic analysis, quantitative and qualitative user testing methods, design of experiments, prototype/concept testing, required
  • Experience with designing, conducting, synthesizing/analyzing data and developing genuine insights
  • Experience working with descriptive and inferential statistics required
  • Experience working in an Agile environment a plus
  • Experience working with FDA, international, and industry human factors standards required
  • Experience building successful strategic human factors program plans based on project objectives and gaining stakeholder buy in and alignment across cross functional teams


Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses and/or Training:


  • Knowledge of human sensation and perception, cognition and human information processing, ergonomics and human occupational biomechanics, with a particular strength in integrating research and industry standards into product designs and design practices.
  • Knowledge of human factors, user-centered design processes, interaction design guidelines, methodologies, industry standards and trends, and usability testing methods.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and/or analyze research related to industries, consumers and competitors.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete qualitative and quantitative analysis and financial models.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and work under deadlines.
  • Ability to drive rigorous, well-communicated deliverables.
  • Attention to detail and strong work ethic.
  • Creative thinker with a bias for action.
  • Good team player, able to build trust relationships within cross-functional teams.


Machine, Tools, and/or Equipment Skills:


High command of Excel and PowerPoint is necessary. Knowledge of Workfront, Jira, Agile or other project management tools is a plus. Command of additional communications equipment / applications as needed.
