Suture Manufacturing Engineer Shawn Davis has optimized all seven years of his time at Arthrex in multiple positions that have allowed him to grow professionally and even learn more about himself on a leadership and personal level. Read on to learn about his career development, his experience working in the Sutures department and how he likes to spend his free time with his young family.

What does a typical day at Arthrex look like for you?

A typical day has changed throughout my seven years here at Arthrex. Recently, my days are filled with reviewing and enhancing processes and procedures. Days entail learning as much as I can about Operational Excellence (OPEX), leading projects generated from Kaizen workshops, time studies and observations, implementing changes in the Sutures Cleanroom, monitoring costs and making changes as necessary, and supporting my team wherever my knowledge of the business can help. I wouldn’t say there is truly a typical day for me at Arthrex.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy most about my job is the people I work with in the Sutures department. We all have so many different personalities, yet we all come together to achieve great things. I’m afforded a unique opportunity to brainstorm with the team and it is great to see these ideas come to life. Work-life balance is key, and I enjoy the opportunities to be involved in extracurricular activities such as this year’s basketball tournament and the occasional slice of pizza at Arthrex One.

What has been a highlight during your time at Arthrex?

A few highlights come to mind for me. Recently, I ran my first Kaizen event and had great results. Another great memory is from a past team building exercise where my team took sailing lessons. For my Trip of a Lifetime to celebrate my five years of service with Arthrex, my wife and I spent two weeks in Hawaii for our wedding anniversary. Many friendships and memories have been created at Arthrex over the years, and for that I am forever grateful. I truly love taking the time to get to know my fellow employees as they are, and it is something I value here at Arthrex.

Our core value is Making People Better. How has Arthrex made you better?

I have grown professionally at Arthrex through trainings and experience. I have been in a few very different positions here, and through these positions I have worked with many aspects of the business, eventually curating a unique position to promote and support the Sutures department through cost-saving and continuous improvement endeavors. Personally, I have done a lot of introspection, and through trainings such as the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People course, managing projects, and working with many different people with common goals, Arthrex has helped me to understand myself. How I like to manage projects and how I handle stress and react to different stimuli has been honed and continues to be sharpened every day.

Notable mention: I even have Arthrex suture holding my kneecap in place!

What do you do in your downtime?

During my time away from Arthrex, I am with my family. My two daughters and I are often outside immersing ourselves in nature. My wife and I try to go on dates once a month; we have both grandmas nearby who can babysit, so we are lucky for that. I also wear a few hats at my church, so I spend some time doing service there. I like to stay active, so my activities range from exercising, playing Ultimate Frisbee, researching the next family trip and snowboarding as time and access allows.
