5 Questions with Catia Costa – Office Supervisor, Arthrex Brazil
How do you impact our mission of Helping Surgeons Treat Their Patients Better™ in your role?
As Regional Operations Manager for all LATAM subsidiaries, my role is to ensure that Arthrex products, instruments and equipment reach hospitals and clinics on time so that our surgeons can treat their patients. The entire LATAM Operations team knows that this work is essential for the success of these surgeries. We maintain the mindset that one of the patients could be a family member and we would want the surgeon operating on them to have all the solutions available to treat them.
What inspires you the most at Arthrex?
What inspires me most at Arthrex is the people: my teammates and the people I collaborate with in my work. Seeing how we all work towards a common goal sharing a common vision makes our daily work better. I am inspired to work in a place where I have the opportunity to collaborate with people who strive to be better every day.
What is your favorite success story at Arthrex?
In my 11 years with Arthrex, I have experienced many success stories in all of our LATAM subsidiaries. When I started at Arthrex, I worked with the Arthrex Mexico team in a similar role. One of the most satisfying examples is witnessing the professional and personal growth of our Arthrex México employees. Many of the employees who worked there when I started are not only still there, but have grown professionally and achieved personal fulfillment. They were able to continue their studies while at Arthrex and obtained positions of greater responsibility. Additionally, they improved their interpersonal and leadership skills, and now help their colleagues improve.
How do you describe the Arthrex culture?
The Arthrex culture focuses on its people above all else. We care about our colleagues and their well-being. We focus on collaboration and living the Arthrex values.
Our core value is Making People Better. How has Arthrex made you better?
Arthrex has made me better by offering me professional development opportunities. This formal training has helped me strengthen my leadership skills and better support my team. Through these courses I have matured professionally for the benefit of my collaborators and colleagues.
What is a typical day at Arthrex like for you?
Working at Arthrex as an Office Supervisor gives me the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge I have acquired over 18 years of professional experience in the field of inventory management and surgical instrumentation within the medical device industry. In Brazil, it is common practice for medical device companies to have a representative present in the operating room to help surgeons use their products correctly and solve any problems that may arise during the procedure. In the role I have, I support and lead the team of surgical scrub technicians in Rio de Janeiro by scheduling our schedules, educating my technicians about our products, participating in surgeries, and coordinating with the sales and logistics teams to ensure that the products are in the right place in a timely manner.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy the challenges and opportunities I get through Arthrex. I joined the Rio de Janeiro team to help open this office in the Brazilian Subsidiary and start operations in this city. I feel very proud to represent Arthrex in Rio de Janeiro and to be able to offer the best materials to treat patients. I trust the quality of our products and take pride in knowing that our products make a difference in people's lives. I feel great pride when I see that the team ends the day with positive results.
What has been the highlight during your time at Arthrex?
The absolute highlight during my time at Arthrex has been seeing the development and expansion of the business and operations in Rio de Janeiro. Day by day, more and more Arthrex products are being used in surgeries. It is something very special for me to be part of the team that introduced Arthrex to Rio. I am grateful that I was able to share my skills and years of both technical and brand knowledge with my colleagues when we were launching operations in Rio..
Our core value is Making People Better. How was Arthrex made you better?
I was able to participate in a leadership program with our Regional Vice President of LATAM, Nelson Valenzuela, and other LATAM managers, which helped me become a better leader for my team. This course helped me increase my professional knowledge, skills and confidence. I put my years of experience in this industry into practice and share my brand knowledge with my colleagues to support each other and become more successful. Knowing that my managers trust my work and can count on me helps me shape those characteristics in my team and encourage them to be better.
Since I joined the Arthrex team, I learned that it is possible to work without overlooking quality, discipline, humility and respect. The ethics and values that I have learned during my stay at Arthrex help me find a balance between my personal and professional life using these tools to be better with both my family and my team.
What do you do in your free time?
In my free time I love taking care of my home and my family. Spending quality time with my family is my top priority. I have a 7-year-old daughter, María Joana, and I enjoy helping her with her homework and closely following her progress in school.
I also love dancing and animals. We have a labrador named Victoria, two canaries and two tortoises.
